Procrastination Galore!

Don’t Delay is a psychology-related blog written by Timothy A. Pychyl that focuses on procrastination. Many students have fallen victim to this timely temptation, leaving their work until the very last minute, before scrambling to finish assignments on time. In college, procrastination is the way of life for many students. Schoolwork is just not as engaging as other activities. Dr. Pychyl updates his audience with the most current research and developments in the procrastination area. One of his more interesting posts details the new iPhone Procrastination Killer application. Dr. Pychyl considers this App to be more of gimmick than anything else. However, on the more serious side, the blog includes research from the most current ideas in psychology like affective forecasting, self-affirmation, and proactive coping. Complex journal articles are broken down into easy-to-grasp concepts and applied to increase awareness to about the psychological workings behind procrastination. Each of the posts dealing with research includes APA style citations for all the articles mentioned. So if a student wanted to write a paper on procrastination this blog would be the perfect source for references. One could spend hours exploring all the different posts about procrastination. Someday, perhaps the day before the final portfolio is due, I will be sure to spend my procrastination time wisely and educate myself about all how exactly humans are able to waste so much time.

I completely agree with you in the last part of your post with the comment on how in the last days of classes you may spend your time searching through reasons as to why humans procrastinate instead of actually doing your own work that is a more pressing issue. However, now I am slightly confused on the concept of the “Don’t Delay” blog as a whole and the purpose behind it. I understand that it aims to post research about procrastination and the reasons as to why people do leave their work until the last minute. Procrastination is something that is very prevalent among most college students, who often choose other activities or anything really, to avoid the schoolwork that they may have to do. With all this research being compiled into a database it often defeats the purpose of understanding procrastination in the first place. This is just another tool and another place for people to spend hours on end surfing the web and delaying their homework even later into the night. The reasons as to why I procrastinate, personally, seem more interesting to read about and actually partake in than actually completing my assignments and tasks at hand. Therefore I completely agree with you that I will inevitably spend hours researching the reasons behind my procrastination instead of completing things I need to get done. So I am confused, why would a doctor put together a website explaining every detail known as of now in research on procrastination when it just creates another way for students to procrastinate even more as if Facebook and YouTube were not enough for the eager college mind. This is just a mind-blowing concept to me.
